Preparing for GCSE Spanish can feel overwhelming, but the right GCSE Spanish revision tips can make a massive difference for both students and parents.

As a PGCE-qualified Spanish teacher with more than ten years of experience in English secondary schools, I’ve helped hundreds of teenagers go from feeling anxious to feeling genuinely confident.

How to Prepare for Your GCSE Spanish Mocks and Real Exams

GCSE Spanish isn’t just about the exam — it’s about learning to communicate. Many of my students continue to A-Level or use the language when travelling to Spain with their families, so strong topic foundations matter.

5. Use Past Papers With a Strategy

Listening:

  • Focus on keywords
  • Don’t panic about understanding everything

Reading:

  • Underline evidence
  • Look for synonyms

Writing:

  • Include past + present + future
  • Justify opinions
  • Use connectives

Speaking:

  • Answer in 2–3 sentences
  • Use killer phrases (see below)

6. Practise Speaking Out Loud

Students can practise by:

  • Describing a photo
  • Giving 3 opinions with reasons
  • Answering “What did you do last weekend?”

  • suelo + infinitivo = I usually…
  • desconectar = to switch off
  • me lo paso bien = I have a good time
  • explicar de forma clara = to explain clearly
  • me gustaría = I would like

Me llamo Ana y tengo quince años. Vivo con mi familia en Londres, en un piso bastante pequeño pero muy acogedor. Los fines de semana suelo levantarme tarde porque estoy cansada después del colegio. El sábado por la mañana hago mis deberes y después me gusta salir a pasear con mis amigos por el parque, especialmente si hace buen tiempo, porque me ayuda a desconectar. Por la tarde, normalmente veo una serie en español para mejorar mi vocabulario. El domingo, mi parte favorita es cocinar con mi madre porque nos lo pasamos muy bien. En el colegio, mi asignatura favorita es el español porque me encantan los idiomas y la profesora explica todo de forma muy clara. Common GCSE Spanish Mistakes (For Stronger GCSE Spanish Revision Tips)

1. Mixing up “fui” and “fue”

  • Incorrect: Ayer fue al cine. (He/She went — not “I went”)
  • Correct: Ayer fui al cine. (I went)
  • Tip: “Fui” = I went. “Fue” = he/she/it went OR it was.

2. Not justifying opinions

  • Basic: Me gusta el español.
  • Better: Me gusta el español porque es divertido.
  • GCSE-ready: Me gusta el español porque es divertido y me ayuda a comunicarme con más gente.

3. Literal translations

  • Incorrect: Estoy caliente. (This means “I’m horny”… 😳)
  • Correct: Tengo calor. (I’m hot.)
  • Incorrect: Estoy 16 años.
  • Correct: Tengo 16 años.

4. Forgetting accents (changes meaning!)

  • el = the (article) él = he
  • si = if sí = yes
  • tu = your tú = you
  • Tip: Accents are tiny but powerful — they can change the whole meaning.

5. Incorrect gender agreement

  • Incorrect: Es una problema.
  • Correct: Es un problema. (Because “problema” is masculine.)
  • Incorrect: Mi madre es simpático.
  • Correct: Mi madre es simpática.

6. Using the wrong “you”

  • tú = you (one person, informal)
  • usted = you (formal)
  • vosotros = you all (plural, informal — used in Spain)
  • ustedes = you all (plural, formal OR informal in Latin America)
  • Tip: GCSE expects the **Spain** version → “vosotros”.

7. Confusing “ser” and “estar”

  • Ser = permanent Soy alta.
  • Estar = temporary Estoy cansada.
  • Incorrect: Soy enferma.
  • Correct: Estoy enferma.

8. Using only the present tense

  • Basic: Juego al fútbol.
  • GCSE-ready: Ayer jugué al fútbol y mañana voy a jugar otra vez.
  • Tip: Always try to include past + present + future.

9. Very short speaking answers

  • Short: Sí.
  • Better: Sí, me gusta mucho.
  • GCSE-ready: Sí, me gusta mucho porque es divertido y me ayuda a relajarme.

10. False friends

asistir = attend (not assist)

embarazada ≠ embarrassed → pregnant!

actualmente ≠ actually → currently

ropa ≠ rope → clothes
